its just a WAYNE THIEBAUD kind of day
you know WAYNE THIEBAUD was my friend Steve’s favorite artist during the time right before he passed away. My art teacher ordered a WAYNE THIEBAUD book for him in the mail, but he died before it was delivered. It was actually delivered on his birthday.

Edouard Manet, The Fifer
This painting may look simple, but it was actually considered very controversial in its time because the background does not have a horizon line. This was very different from the rest of the paintings of its period. Seems very simple, but actually sprang a big controversy.
And here’s another one from the series. Again, done in colored pencil. Again, in any given spot there is about 9 different colors used to create the color that you see.
I know I’ve posted these before, but I’m doing it again. This is an example of what you can do with colored pencil. In any given square millimeter of this piece I used about 9 different colored pencils, usually more. I really think these could almost pass as acrylic paintings.
And for those who don’t know, these two pieces are part of my monster sweater series, inspired by the episode of the Rugrats where Chucky thinks there’s a monster under his bed but its just his dad’s sweater.
Colored pencils don’t get the recognition they deserve. You can make tons of amazing pieces using colored pencil. When I tell people my favorite medium to work with is colored pencil, they tend to think that I must not be a very good artist.
Well let me tell you something. If you don’t think colored pencils are a fun and challenging medium to work with, then you must suck at using them. They are a very legitimate material for fine artists to use. If you are using the proper brand of colored pencil, then you could employ the same techniques that you would using acrylic or oil paints. Colored pencil can be layered and mixed, and you can create a variety of textures with them.
So screw you. nah just kidding. Screw you only if you don’t like colored pencil. yeah.
